The kola seed, known as Cola nitida, comes from a tropical tree native to West Africa. The kolatier can reach a height of 20 meters and is characterized by its large, oblong leaves and yellow flowers with red streaks.
Kola seeds have been used by West Africans as a natural stimulant for centuries. They were chewed during long walks or intensive work to combat fatigue and improve stamina.
Its bioactive compounds include caffeine, alkaloids such as theobromine, tannins, flavonoids and phenolic compounds such as catechins, which act on oxidative stress.
