Detailed description
The California poppy or golden poppy(Eschscholtzia californica) is a flowering plant of the Papaveraceae family, native to the southwestern United States and emblematic of the state of California. The plant has been introduced by man to Chile, the Mediterranean coast, South Africa, Australia (including Tasmania) and New Zealand.
The California poppy was highly prized by Native Americans in traditional medicine, and used to promote sleep, reduce stress and nervous tension, and relieve spasms and headaches.
Eschscholtzia Californica is composed of carotenoids (luteoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin and eschscholtzxanthin), which give the petals their color, flavonoids (in the form of quercetin and isorhamnetin glycosides), as well as a variety of alkaloids found exclusively in this plant, including benzylisoquinolines, protopine, allocryptopine and aporphine.
