Detailed description
Melissa officinalis L. is an aromatic perennial herb belonging to the Lamiaceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin and Western Asia, and cultivated worldwide.
Lemon balm leaves contain numerous bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic acids, tannins and essential oil, which differ according to the way in which extraction is carried out and the part of the plant subjected to extraction. The main active constituents are volatile compounds (geranial, neral, citronellal and geraniol), triterpenes (ursolic acid and oleanolic acid), phenolic compounds (rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid and protocatechic acid) and flavonoids (quercetin, rhamnocitrin, luteolin).
Its use is particularly linked to the presence of these bioactive compounds, which have been shown to have powerful antioxidant properties. The plant is traditionally used for gastrointestinal disorders, cardiovascular health, good neurological and therefore psychological functioning, and its effects on memory, sleep and stress.
