Fumaria officinalis - fumitory

Detailed description

Fumitory Fumaria officinalis is an annual plant of the Papaveraceae family, widely distributed in Europe, Asia and North Africa. Recognized since Antiquity for its benefits, it is mainly used to support digestive and hepatobiliary comfort.

The aerial parts of fumitory contain isoquinoline alkaloids, such as fumariline and protopine, as well as flavonoids, tannins and phenolic acids, notably rosmarinic acid. These compounds contribute to the natural regulation of bile secretions and aid digestion.

It is traditionally used to improve renal water elimination, helping to maintain optimal water balance. Its antioxidant properties protect cells against free radicals, supporting the body’s natural defense functions.

Finally, research highlights its soothing effects on mild discomfort linked to intestinal spasms, thanks to its gentle action on the muscles.
