The prickly pear(Opuntia ficus-indica) is an emblematic plant of arid zones. It is cultivated in Latin America and the Mediterranean basin. Traditionally, nopal has been used for its multiple benefits, particularly in relation to carbohydrate metabolism and weight control. Its cladodes and fruit skins are valued for their wealth of bioactive compounds.
