Detailed description
The plantain plant, known scientifically as Plantago major, is a perennial herb belonging to the Plantaginaceae family. It is easily recognized by its broad, oval, veined leaves and cylindrical spikes of inflorescence.
It is traditionally applied as a poultice to burns and stings for its soothing and repairing effects.
The mucilage in plantain leaves is said to help soothe mucous membranes, which explains its use as an infusion or dietary supplement in syrup form, particularly for its benefits for the respiratory and digestive systems.
The plantain plant is rich in bioactive phytochemicals such as caffeic acid derivatives, flavonoids, tannins, iridoid glycosides (aucubin) and terpenoids with soothing astringent properties.
