Detailed description

Ruscus aculeatus (family Asparagaceae) is a shrub native to the Mediterranean basin.

The underground parts of butcher’s broom have been traditionally used for hundreds of years in Europe to promote renal and digestive elimination and improve transit.

The main active substances identified are steroidal sapogenins, ruscogenin and neoruscogenin. These active ingredients have been the subject of scientific research into their vasoconstrictive and venotonic properties.

Preparations based on little holly root are currently used to ensure good vascular function and as a tonic involving the venous system, notably to ease circulation. The roots can also be used to promote renal elimination and urinary system health.
