Detailed description
The fig is the fruit of the Ficus carica fig tree, a small member of the Moraceae family. It is native to Southwest Asia and the Eastern Mediterranean. Today, it is cultivated throughout the world for its fruit.
Figs are used as an excellent source of minerals and vitamins. Phytochemical analysis reveals phenolic compounds, including anthocyanin pigments, phytosterols, organic acids and triterpenoids. They are particularly rich in dietary fiber and amino acids.
